Broken Mirror

Relationship are like mirror, once broken cannot be mended. One such relation had cost India gold at the just concluded CWG at Delhi in which our countries sportsperson had put a valiant effort and bagged 38 gold medal to finish second in the medal tally.

The duo of Leander paes and Mahesh bhupathi who are double Asian games gold medalist and winners of many a grand slams and numerous ATP titles are the talking point of this write-up.Tennis which was included for the first time in the CWG was a discipline where India was expected to sweep all the medals at stake but despondently they could only finish with one gold , one silver and two bronze medals.

Leander who partnered Mahesh in men's doubles and Sania in the mixed doubles was expected to clinch nothing short of two golds could only win one bronze with mahesh at the expense of another Indian pair .If you had chance to watch their matches in this event you would certainly agree with me that there was lack of coordination among them which is due to their lack of practice together, which naturally makes us question their commitment to the nation !

The duo have many a times bailed out India from losses in the Davis cup ties ,the most recent being their important victory against the visiting Brazilian team which enabled us to qualify for the world group tie.So isn't it unfair to question them ?But the news of they skipping the Asian games to defend their gold medal and rather concentrating on the season ending master's tournament would even infuriate their hard core fans too and surely raise an iota of doubt in our mind about their commitment.

The Indian Express started playing together as a pair in the year 1996 and after initial struggle they started creating magic with their passionate play.In the year 1999 we saw this duo progress to the finals of all the 4 grand slams winning the Wimbledon and French open.Leander too achieved the number one ranking in that same year.Newspapers were splashed with their winning stories. Then all of a sudden everything started falling apart. There was ego clashes and soon they decided to end their pairing. It came as a jolt to all the Indian fans who never expected this express to derail, rather all of us expected them to bring more and more accolades.

Rivalry replaced camaraderie both on and off the field as both competed to win titles one more than the other and took their opportunity to belittle the other.Leander during the Qatar Asian games questioned the commitment of Mahesh; who on his part orchestrated revolt of Davis cup players against Leander's leadership.

Frequent news about their Petty fights pained the general public of India and we became laughing stock to the world when this pairing couldn't win any medals at Olympics in their three attempts.Time has come for the Indian Tennis Federation who had been silent spectator to this whole controversy to act and find suitable replacement for this pairing to represent our country in major events.Rohan boppana who has started playing well consistently in the ATP circuit is the best alternate available, finding him a partner should be the priority for the federation now if they nurture any hope of bagging medals.

Derailing of this Indian express should be taken as a case study to current and future generation and each of us should set aside any egos while representing the country ......
